| Abstract | The pan-European snow-off date (snowoff) for the period 2001 to 2015 was determined from daily satellite-based maps of Fractional Snow Cover (FSC). The Snow-off date is the first day with 0 % snow cover after a period of continuous winter snow cover as seen by the satellite under cloud-free days. The method was developed by Sari Metsamaki at the Finnish Environment Institute during the CLIPC project. The determination of the snow-off date relies on the available cloud-free observations of FSC, and thus its accuracy depends on the length of cloudy periods. The data set was validated with ground observations of snow depths from German and Finnish weather stations. The mean absolute difference to in situ observations was 29 and 5 days in Germany and Finland, respectively. |
