The original esl values were taken from Muis et al 2016 (see references). The return periods have been determined for the 1974-2014 time frame. To the historical esl values we added the projected sea-level rise between 2020-2050 and 2070-2100 (see slr indicator) for RCP 2.6. Hence, the full distributions of esl values is shifted according to the changes in local sea-level expected in the future. Note that no assumption on changes in the storm surge component of the esl. Based on EU-DEM elevation data with a horizontal resolution of 25m (DG Enterprise and Industry 2013) and a flood fill algorithm using the 8 nearest neighbours (see Boettle 2011), the flooded grid cells at a flood height equal to the esl + slr are determined. Subsequently, the corresponding inundation heights are obtained by subtracting the terrain elevation to the heigh of the flood previously calculated. Importantly, this approach disregards the effect of artificial flood barriers such as dikes and sea walls.
