CLIPC: Constructing Europe's Climate Information Portal

CLIPC provides access to Europe's climate data and information.

MyCLIPC data processing - Concept of processing data

Warning: MyCLIPC is not available anymore as the CLIPC project has reached end of life.

The MyCLIPC data processing wizard (aimed at climateclimate
Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the average weather, or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. The classical period for averaging these variables is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization. The relevant quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation and wind. Climate in a wider sense is the state, including a statistical description, of the climate system.
scientists) allows you to use the CLIPC processing services (behind our interfaces and indicators produced) more tailor made. After creating a personal login you can select, process, and download datasets by making use of the tools in your own personal MyCLIPC work space.

To access your MyCLIPC page you will have to make use of your Google account. The first time the user has to login and approve that the user’s identity (email and unique identifier) is being used by the CLIPC portal. The second time this is remembered by Google. Your account is confirmed and your personal MyCLIPC page will provide you with the following options:

  • View dataset basket
  • View current and previous jobs
  • Calculate indicators

Dataset basket
The dataset basket provides you with an overview of datasets that you have collected during your current session, datasets that you have processed in previous sessions and data that you might have uploaded from your own data collection. The dataset basket includes buttons that allow you to upload, delete and download datasets from the basket.

Current and previous jobs
This page provides you with an overview of current and previous jobs. The following information is given for these jobs; starting date and time, the name of the job, the location of the output file, a progress bar, a report of the job process, the option to view the dataset in the data viewer and the option to remove the job from your overview.

Calculate indices
This option allows you to start a new job. There are different kinds of processes that can be started from this page allowing you to create new datasets or to process existing datasets.

Start index defining wizard
When creating a new process just follow the steps and directions in the wizard. For some indices it is possible to indicate an extra option. For example, if the category temperature is selected, the index ‘number of summer days’ can be chosen. The definition of a summer day is not consistent across Europe and therefore a temperature threshold can be defined as an extra option. Each index is provided with an explanation and guidance on the recommended use of the index.

The CLIPC portal is a platform providing access to various datasets. After the selection of an index, the input dataset should be selected. The input dataset is the database from which the indices are downloaded. This dataset can be one of the datasets that CLIPC provides (‘select new’) or a dataset that you have (previously) uploaded (‘select from basket’). The selected files will be shown in a list and recommendation of use will be given for these files.

The selection for creating a new index is now completed and a summary of your settings can be found in the next section. Here you have the option to give your job a name, allowing easy recognition for later use. Now you can start your job by selecting ‘run’.

Follow job progress
The progress of your job can be found on the current and previous jobs page of MyCLIPC. Your new job can be found in the overview under the name you have provided. The progress bar shows how much of your new job is done. This process might take some time, therefore you can come back later, login again and then view your result. You can also start a new job by following previous steps. The output will automatically be stored in your data basket and will always be there.
