Urban heat island

Period: 20060831- 20130831
Abstract: The urban heat island indicator delivered in this file refers to the difference in summer surface temperature between the urban area of a city and its rural surroundings. Data on land-surface temperatures have been derived from MYD11A2 Version 5 data of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) using the NASA Aqua platform. This product provides a 8-day-mean land surface temperature with a spatial resolution of 1km, at around 13:30 and 1:30 local time, respectively. To differenti...
Pan-European snow-off date (2001-2015)

Period: 20010101- 20151231
Abstract: The pan-European snow-off date (snowoff) for the period 2001 to 2015 was determined from daily satellite-based maps of Fractional Snow Cover (FSC). The Snow-off date is the first day with 0 % snow cover after a period of continuous winter snow cover as seen by the satellite under cloud-free days. The method was developed by Sari Metsamaki at the Finnish Environment Institute during the CLIPC project. The determination of the snow-off date relies on the available cloud-free observations of FSC, a...

Period: 20030101- 20141231
Abstract: This indicator is derived from the European Commission, Joint Research Centre's global, multi-annual database of satellite-measured values of Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). FAPAR is a bio-geophysical variable that measures the fraction of incident solar radiation that is absorbed by land vegetation for photosynthesis. High FAPAR values are associated with favourable conditions for vegetation growth, while low FAPAR values are associated with stress and disturba...
